The JookJOYnt

In the year 2020, creatives, artists, and activists have established their own galaxy, far far away from Planet Earth and The Rona; a virus attacking the land. Travel through this star system, stopping at planets and clusters with Woolly Mammoth and Black in Space - powered by Makers Lab - to a galaxy known as THE JOOKJOYNT.

MEET THE ARTISTS

Makers Lab builds + supports LGBTQ+ communities by creating zero proof experiences that celebrate life, art + LGBTQ+ culture. We are a collective of creatives, catalysts, storytellers + curators.

After a two and half year hiatus, Makers Lab has relaunched to create celebratory zero proof/sober spaces. In these times of uncertainty and grief, more than ever we need spaces to come together. We will create virtually, and eventually in person when it is safe for us to come together again. This second time around will be even more joyous!

A NOTE FROM MARIA MANUELA GOYANES

Maria-Goyanes_.jpg

First coined as a term in the 1990s by cultural critic Mark Dery, Afrofuturism has long been a part of Black cultural production in this country - across literature, visual art, music, performance, and film. It is a movement that combines elements of the African diaspora with technology as a way for Black people to reclaim their racial identity, and imagine possible worlds through a Black cultural lens. These new realities provide a way for Black people to shape a future that is entirely their own, where greater justice and freer artistic and personal expression prevail.

BLACK IN SPACE missions, powered by Makers Lab, are intergalactic virtual offerings of, by, and for all Black LGBTQ++ communities. I’m thrilled that Woolly can provide a larger platform for these wonderful artists, especially as most are a part of our own DMV community. This is our second collaboration with MAKERS LAB, and we are deeply indebted to Lee Perine, Patience Sings, and their talented team for their vision and artistry.

Afrofuturism often unsettles notions of linear time, and so does THE JOOKJOYNT. Let the experience wash over you, and prepare to meet a group of vibrant, dynamic, and exciting artists among the stars!

Hasta la proxima,
Maria

PS: Don’t forget to check out MAKERS LAB’s future projects, including an upcoming collaboration with the DC Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs to celebrate World AIDS Day! Visit makerslabdc.co for more information.

PPS: For a deeper dive into the world of Afrofuturism, I highly recommend you read the science fiction novels of Octavia Butler, listen to the jazz musician Sun Ra and/or singer-songwriter Janelle Monae, or watch the movie Black Panther (again!).
